    For the first time in school history, the South Winn Warrior football team will be competing for the Class 1A state football title. The Warriors defeated West Branch (12-1) Saturday, Nov. 14, 14-7 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.

    "The Music Man" takes center stage at Valley

    The Valley drama department will be performing "The Music Man," this weekend. Performances are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2:30 p.m. All performances are at the high school gym.

    Defense dominates; Warriors in the Class 1A finals

    It was a battle of two highly potent offenses Saturday when South Winn took on West Branch in the Class 1A state semifinals. However both defenses stole the show, with South Winn edging the Bears 14-7 for the right to compete for the state title.

    Valley board approves early retirement policy

    ELGIN- The Valley Board of Education approved the first reading of an early retirement program Monday. Superintendent Cathy Molumby said it has been a few years since Valley offered such early retirement. The new program is open to employees with at least 10 years’ service and who are 55 years of age. Molumby said past programs used an age of 57 and service of at least 15 years. The monetary incentive includes a one-time cash payment of $30,000. The money can also go towards health insurance premiums.

    2010 Barn Quilt calendars available now

    Fayette County Barn Quilts calendars are available for purchase at several locations around the county. Cost is just $10 for a single calendar, or they are $8 each if bought in a quantity of five or more. Featured on the cover is Alan and Judy Albrencht’s “Lucky Clover” barn quilt block at 9831 P. Ave., Maynard. Other barn quilt blocks featured include James and Sue Updegraff’s “Gentleman’s Fancy,” as January’s focus, and Shirley Fettkether’s “Contrary Wife,” at 17079 100th St., Maynard in February.

    WU Christmas lights turned on Nov. 27

    The West Union Recreation Center will be lit up Friday, Nov. 27, when the Christmas lights are officially turned on for the season. A special ceremony will be held at 5 p.m.
